Anxiety Definition: What Is It And Who Does It Affect?

Finding ways to deal with anxiety is key to living healthier and happier.

Over the years, you may have heard anxiety more frequently. That’s because it’s recognized as a disorder, one which ranges from mild to severe. Feelings of anxiety are normal however those who suffer from it experience it more often and have a hard time overcoming it. Below, we’ll define anxiety and who is commonly affected by the disorder. 

What is Anxiety? 

According to the anxiety definition, it is an emotion that produces tension and worry. These thoughts can get so intense that they cause the body to react with things like: 

  • Quickened breath
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeats
  • Sweating

Not every person experiencing anxiety has the same symptoms, varying from person to person. In addition, anxiety is not limited to one race or gender and can affect anyone. 

Who Has Anxiety? 

Anxiety is non-discriminative and can affect anyone at any time. Children can be anxious and can experience anxiety and panic attacks. Adults too can experience these symptoms, ranging from very mild to very intense. The more intense the symptoms, the more anxiety interferes with one’s day-to-day life. Finding ways to deal with anxiety is key to living healthier and happier. 

Dealing with Anxiety

Though anxiety has different levels, there are similar ways that those who suffer from it can overcome it. First and foremost, those suffering from anxiety should try to find the root cause for their anxious feeling and start there. Then, they can incorporate activities like the following to try and stop it from getting worse. 

1. Breathing 

Learning to control breathing is an amazing technique when dealing with anxiety. When symptoms start to arise and anxiety builds up, you should take deep breaths and let them out slowly, attempting to relax. 

2. Meditating 

Meditation is a great way to find out where your anxiety is coming from. It’s a way to let your mind speak and get everything else out of the way. Try to incorporate at least a few minutes each day to get used to it and use it when you need it. 

3. Physical Activity 

Those that fit the anxiety definition can start working up a sweat to reduce anxiety. Heart-pumping exercised bring oxygen to the brain and all around the body and make everything more oxygenated and calmer. Adding physical activity to your routine at least three times a week will reduce anxiety and keep you calm if attacks do show up.

Taking the steps to learn what anxiety is and how you can prevent it from happening is the first step in overcoming it. Though you may experience anxiety from time to time, there are ways to manage it. If you realize that it’s getting in that way of your day-to-day life, it could be time to get in contact with your medical doctor to find ways to combat it. You shouldn’t have to suffer from anxiety, learn the cause and grow.
